When Brand Nubian stepped onto the scene at the dawn of the 1990s, it seemed as if funky, mindful, barrier-breaking hip-hop albums were coming out every day. De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest were at the height of their powers, and nearly forgotten groups such as KMD and the Goats were dropping gems. A hip-hop group from New Rochelle, New York, Brand Nubian – aka MCs Grand Puba, Sadat X and Lord Jamar – attained legendary status on the underground off the back of their celebrated debut album, “one for all” . Easy flow and laid-back rhythms serving as the platform for the declaration of their Islamic faith and the teachings of The 5% Nation. In recent years, the group have been better known for their respective solo joints than new material, but live they still bring it with poignant sentiments and politically charged rhymes.
